Andrology

The Andrology (from the greek aner: man and logos: speech) the branch of medicine that focuses its studies on men’s health, with special reference to disorders of the reproductive and urogenital systems. It is the counterpart of gynecology, the science that deals instead of the typical female disorders. The andrology has become a science in its own right only after the end of the sixties, mainly thanks to the work of the German dermatologist C. Schirren, who founded a trade journal on the subject (titled first Andrologie and then Andrology, from the Latin) published for the first time in 1969.

In 1975 in the United States was born  ASA, American Society of Andrology, which was the first act of “independence” of urologists, which followed the establishment in Pisa, the following year, the SIA, the Italian Society of Andrology. This matter was first slowly and then forcefully cut their own space, which deals with topical themes. In fact, many advances have been made in research and application of clinical data from more and more studies on the topics of andrology and is now can identify and deal with people with good efficacy diseases once overlooked or underestimated in their importance, especially for the psychological implications of which involve leading a normal love life and relationships.

Currently, the relevance of andrological diseases have assumed a very large, such that they can be framed as a real social ills. Think about the substantial increase in the incidence, scientifically proven, to issues such as male infertility and erectile dysfunction, which is associated, and sometimes they cause, disorders typical of man has always been a subject of study, related to sexology and the prostate-vesicular sphere.

It has been proven to cause male fertility affects at least half of the total cases of infertile couples, and are illustrated by recent studies major proportions of males suffering from erectile dysfunction, represented not only by the well known “impotentia erectile”, but also esthetic and functional alterations of the auction as “induratio plastic penis and congenital recurvatuum. The significance of the impact of prostate-vesicular disease in determining the uro-genital symptoms, sexual and reproductive health of men is well known. Alteration of the safeguard mechanisms that the reproduction of the species involves various organs so closely linked, despite the peculiarities of the functions they perform. A poor semen quality may, for example, reflect a defect in the development of the gonads as the germ line, the extreme, could be the result of a superimposed inflammatory prostate-vesicular untreated. Similarly, erectile dysfunction may reflect a multifactorial etiology, as determined by the interactions between their functional and organic causes overlapped by the “anxiety of failure.” And even in the field of organic causes, opens a wide range of possible etiology. The problem must be seen and solved in the interests of unity, whereas the whole of the bodies that regulate the “quality of life” of man (and consequently of / partner’s) and then converge when diagnostic tests show the core of the problem.

From all this follows the need for close collaboration between specialists from different disciplines, such as to approach the subject in its unity and not forgetting the scores of seemingly minor issues such as psychology to cure the patient, which must be carefully evaluated and supported to achieve the best results from therapy.
